Tonight I watched two movies in the which the main characters were both writers or novelists. One of the movies I didn't care for and found it rather boring, but the other I loved and thought was really romantic.
The first movie I watched was Young Adult with Charlize Theron. This movie was slow, boring, and not my type of humor. I wouldn't recommend it, even though it got good reviews. The plot isn't really that great or stimulating, and nothing exciting happens. It's easy to predict what will happen.
Although, this movie got me thinking of the typical writer. To me writers have always seemed to be messed up in the head and have extreme emotional problems. Quite often writers seem to be alcoholics, who can't get rid of their problems even if they write about them. The question is why are writers always depicted like this? Does having to write a novel really take that much toll on ones mental state, that you drive yourself mad and into addictions. Now I'm not saying that I could ever write a successful novel, but I am saying that if I tried I don't think I would go absolutely crazy. I think the easiest thing to write about is your dreams or fantasies, those kind of things come easily. Does this mean that writers have no dreams and fantasies to base a good story off of? I'm just saying I'd like to see a writer in a movie be depicted as something other than an alcoholic insane person who destroys their own lives and the ones around them just to get a couple of chapters for a book.
After thinking this while watching Young Adult, I watched Midnight in Paris which actually showed the writer in the movie as a dreamer. Possible why I like this movie so much. Owen Wilson plays the charming character of Gil who is engaged to Rachel McAdams ( I already forgot her characters name). Gil is quite a dreamer and wishes he lived in Paris during the 1920's. His book is actually based off of his fantasies of past lives. Gil is actually able to somehow travel back to his dream period everynight at midnight. This movie is so romantic. The scenery of Paris, especially in the 20's is very alluring.
This made me wonder what era I would like to live in, and it't quite hard to give a solid answer. I would love to be a flapper in the 20's. I would also love to live in the 40's. I base my answer mostly on the styles of these times and how women carried themselves. During this era's women wore dresses and had beautiful hair. They acted classy and very ladylike, which is the very style I love the best.
